"Dump" Cake

During our trip to Palm Springs, my stepmother was eager to make us a recipe she had found for "Dump" Cake. Before you start cracking all kinds of nasty jokes about the name of the cake like my dad did (thanks for always lightening the mood, daddy!), this dessert gets its name from its ease of preparation. You literally dump a few ingredients into a baking dish (no stirring!), pop it into the oven, and in an hour you have dessert.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must share with you that this cake is tooth-achingly sweet, and totally artificial-tasting (take a look at the ingredients, you'll see why). It's also not really a cake, it came out resembling a crisp or crumble. Disclaimers aside, though, I couldn't stop eating it. Even for breakfast. This is an ideal dessert to make with kids since it's really impossible to mess up. A fun one!

But does anyone have an idea for a more appetizing name? "Dump" Cake sort of makes me cringe.

1 can crushed pineapple, undrained
1 can cherry pie filling
1 box yellow cake mix
2 sticks of butter, cut into 12 slices each
1/4 cup chopped walnuts

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (325 for glass baking dish). Dump pineapple into 9x13 baking dish and spread it out evenly.

2. Using a spoon, dump globs of cherry pie filling evenly on top of the pineapple. Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the cherry and pineapple layers.

3. Place butter slices evenly over cake mix. Sprinkle nuts on top.

4. Bake for one hour or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean (Amy's note: ours needed to bake for almost an hour and a half)

5. To serve, scoop cake out with a large spoon like a cobbler. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Hmm. Does sound too sweet for me, but I betcha I have a family who would devour it.
Gotta agree about the name though! Who thought of that one??

I know the name is off-putting, but folks who love sweets will like this cake. Your photos are terrific.

Your pictures of this dessert clearly make up for the off putting name! I have seen this recipe before but never have made it. I can see myself making a variation of this for the fall season, perhaps with apples!

I have to admit, this looks kind of amazing. I have a weakness for that instacavity cherry pie filling, and yellow cake mix? Despite all my disdain for box mixes, I'm so there.

As for the name... Presto Cake? Pie Cake? (for "easy as pie" as well as the cherry pie filling--and come on, who could resist a name with both pie and cake??)

I've been making variations of this since I was a kid- we always call it ___ crunch cake. Cherry crunch, apple crunch, whatever, lol. I agree- it's yummy!

Dump cake is so awesome. I love it so. I only have it once a year though, or I eat the whole thing. ;)
