I first read about the Rainbow Cake phenomenon at Omnomicon (one of my favorite food blogs). Aleta, the author, has an awesome step-by-step tutorial on how to make this cake, so I'm going to refer you to her post if you'd like to make one. I didn't use her soda method, just used a plain ol' box of Betty Crocker white cake mix, made according to the package directions. I used about one scant cup of batter per color.

Have I mentioned how much I adore my box of food coloring? It's far more fun than a box of Crayolas, and I *love* Crayolas.

I used cream cheese frosting tinted purple (Mary's favorite kind of frosting and favorite color) and served it with berry lemonade. She was so surprised and happy when she cut into the middle. Score! Happy birthday, Mary! Big hugs!

Not going to lie... every time I see the rainbow cake, it weirds me out. I think it would be a blast to make it, but I would wind up throwing the whole thing out because I can't bring myself to eat unnaturally colored (or flavored) foods!
This is a work of art! Your friend is a lucky gal :)
so you just plop the colors one on top of the other into the pans and they bake out like that? i really want to make this but i'm afraid i'll screw it up and get a mess!
That's quite a psychedelic cake! Love the colors!
@Rebekah I was afraid too, but it works! Just make sure you plop the batter in the middle of the pan, and it'll spread out. Also be sure to use the proportions she gives (more of the first 3 colors and less of the last 3). You can do it! :)
Wow, Amy I am impressed! This cake looks soooo cool and sooo fun! Great job!
omg! that is fantastic!!!
I think this might be one of my favorite things ever. I'm also SO impressed that you were able to keep yourself from shrieking about the rainbow part so it was a surprise! I would be like, "omg omg omg GUESS WHAT'S INSIDE?!?!?!?!?"
I can not express the amount of LOVE I felt when cutting into that wonderful cake. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! The best cake I have ever seen and eaten! Amy, You are the best!!!!!!!
Love always,
m
Wowowowowowowowowowowow Amazing! Great work!
I saw this when Aleta first posted it, and I fell in love! As a huge fan of Rainbow Brite back in the 80s, this cake speaks to my inner child. I have a birthday coming up in a few weeks and have been dropping hints about wanting one, but I may end up having to make my own if no one else comes through :)
that is pretty freakin amazing!!!!!!!
Wow. This is a work of art!! How fun and exciting to cut into this cake expecting white or chocolate and see rainbow!!! What a sweet friend you are!!

it's beautiful! It looks like we have the same food coloring as well :)
One question, did you notice a sort of play-doh-ish smell after it was baked? I made a rainbow cake a few weeks ago (see picture link in my name) and everyone said it had a funny smell! haha i can't wait to make it again!
@Elizabeth Thanks! I didn't notice that. Did you use a boxed cake mix? I wonder if the food coloring reacted with something in your cake batter? Hope it still tasted good even with the funny smell :)
That is too cool! What a fun cake. This will be a neat thing to try with my sister, who I love to bake with.
That is SO cool!!! my nephews would love this for a birthday cake!
So cool, such striking colours!
I cannot wait to try this! My friend would love this cake for her birthday since she is definitely a happy rainbow kinda gal!!! :)
Amy, it came out beautifully! I would argue better than my own.
Thank you for the link back. =)
Wow this is beautiful! I have seen other rainbow cakes but yours looks gorgeous. My friend's birthday is next week and I might just have to this for her....
Thanks for the amazing pictures!

=O That is so beautiful!! I love me some colors. I'm so glad I'm not squeamish about eating strange colored food <3 <3
That is some trippy stuff, dude. I bet my friends would love to dig into this. Looks extra fun to make.
Awesome! I love colorful cakes like this, very trippy man.
Awesome.
This is what I love about your blog, you find things that other blog readers - like me fail to find. Thank you for sharing.
This is awesome!
I just made this cake today... My little brother was so excited to see all the colors when it came out of the oven. Making it kid-friendly with chocolate icing, hopefully he'll love it. =]
Hello, I stopped by from Judy's. What an amazing cake. Something like this would be great for halloween or a Mad Hatter party. Thank you for sharing.
I'm having fun looking at these rainbow cakes tonight on blogs. I saw one on a blog I follow and am spending my Saturday night adoring them. How sad is that?! lol. Yours looks great!!
I made the cake for my daughters 6th birthday and it came out awesome. Thanks for posting. I was worried the adults at the party wouldn't eat it because of all the color so I made some cookies on the side. Turns out they were almost more excited about it than the kids...cake all gone.
I did the same thing for my friend's b-day a while back. He was being a brat and not letting me use any colors, so I made it all manly and black and white on the outside, and then three multi-colored layers inside that he didn't know about. I loved the shock on his face when he cut into it. I love the intense colors you were able to get though, very nice.
This is great!! My MIL is a wonderful cake maker (is that what they're called?) and I'm not sure that she's ever done one like this! Thanks for sharing... wonderful yummy pictures!!
