Berries for sale!
We had such a fun day yesterday. The berry picking turned into cherry picking when we got there and discovered that it's too early for you-pick berries. It was so fun anyways. They had raspberries for sale (just not picking), so Shelby and I split half a flat and I made raspberry cobbler (Bittman, obviously) last night. YUM.
Since I got 17 million pounds of cherries, we dried some overnight in our new food dehydrator, along with some raspberries. Interesting. And, just now, I made a pie. My first pie ever! It's in the oven now, I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Since I used cherries and not berries, I used a different Bittman recipe. However, I went with my gut and didn't do it in a straightforward, classic 2-crust pie way, and wound up combining 3 of his recipes (one for the crust, one for the filling, and one for a streusel topping). I hope it works, but he seems to be very mixy-matchy friendly. I made some stupid mistakes, like trying to cream brown sugar with frozen butter, which obviously didn't work. I decided it actually looked ideal for streusel, though, so I proceeded. It was very Dippin' Dots-like.
Maybe I'll be back later with more pie-making war stories. I snapped a bunch of pictures as I was making it, but I'm currently incapacitated on the couch (in a good way)!
